Elevate Care

Bayhealth’s medical education programs are instrumental to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our local communities. As we attract talented medical school students and graduates to train here, and hopefully stay to continue their careers, we are expanding upon the number of physicians available to the people of central and southern Delaware. This pipeline of highly-trained primary care physicians and specialists is serving our community now and for many years to come.

Growing Medical Expertise

Our Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Program residents are training under the finest physicians in our region to become exceptional primary care doctors. They are offering attentive and compassionate care to our families today and the next generation. These two programs each have a medical practice locally where residents hone their skills and also see patients, under the supervision of attending physicians. The Family Medicine, Dover practice and the Internal Medicine, Milford practice add more than 30,000 and 20,000 patient care visits, respectively, to our community each year.

Our General Surgery Residency Program is advancing surgical expertise in our region and helping to meet the surgical needs of the underserved community.

Advanced Facilities Elevate Training and Care

Through the generosity of donors, we are building innovative residency programs with facilities and resources that reflect the latest medical technology. The PCOM simulation laboratory, or sim lab, offers a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot space for immersive learning using robotic equipment and computer simulation that mimics patient responses and medical scenarios.

The high-tech resources and equipment in the PCOM Sim Lab include:

DaVinci Simulation Training Console - provides surgeons with specialized content to support learning over time. The program includes a library of realistic simulations for residents to practice skills, and benefit from training exercises and virtual reality experiences. The module also includes performance measurement to track progress and manage development. https://www.intuitive.com/en-us/products-and-services/da-vinci/education/simnow

VirtaMed Laparos - a mixed reality simulator designed to assist in building laparoscopic general surgery skills. Equipped with a realistic belly, camera and surgical instruments, it allows for learners to practice patient positioning, trocar placement and team training. Mixed reality simulation training enables learners to practice and hone their surgical skills in a risk-free environment.

Gaumard Victoria and Baby - Victoria is a full-body childbirth simulation manikin that can birth a lifelike baby, designed for obstetrical training to learners of all levels. Both come equipped with programmable vital functions that can be evaluated using real hospital devices and monitors. Victoria includes labor and delivery scenarios and converts into a non-pregnant patient for gynecology and general nursing training.

Gaumard Trauma Hal - an advanced full body patient simulation manikin designed for trauma and critical care training. Trauma Hal helps teams engage in real life training exercises to improve emergency response and patient care. Using Hal, learners are able to monitor vitals, perform surgical airway exercises, chest tube insertions, hear heart and lung sounds, and much more.

Simbionix Endo Mentor Suite - a mixed reality system that simulates endoscopy, bronchoscopy and endourology training. The platform utilizes authentic scopes equipped with upper and lower GI simulated cases for hands-on training. https://simbionix.com/simulators/gi-mentor/gi-mentor/ Gaumard Pediatric Hal – the world’s most advanced pediatric patient simulator. This manikin is the physical size of a 5-year-old with programmable sounds and responses as well as simulated lifelike facial expressions, movement and speech. It can be utilized for training on pediatric patient care skills and practicing emergency care training and teamwork among residents, nurses and other staff.

Gaumard Pediatric Hal - the world’s most advanced pediatric patient simulator. This manikin is the physical size of a 5-year-old with programmable sounds and responses as well as simulated lifelike facial expressions, movement and speech. It can be utilized for training on pediatric patient care skills and practicing emergency care training and teamwork among residents, nurses and other staff.

CAE STOPS Surgical Cut Suit - the most realistic way to simulate the look and feel of traumatic events on a live person. This allows medical staff to safely perform real procedures while minimizing patient risk. The skin and organs are user repairable, enabling multiple training sessions per unit. Procedures that can be performed on this include surgical cricothyroidotomy, thoracotomy, laparotomy, and Foley catheterization. https://www.caehealthcare.com/surgical-simulation/surgical-cut-suits/

Simbionix GI Express - a portable unit that features advanced endoscopic simulation. It is a tabletop platform that can be connected to a laptop to offer real life simulation using an actual endoscope.
