Three Bayhealth nurses celebrating residency accreditation

Nurse Residency Program Brings the Best to Bayhealth

As a Magnet® and Planetree recognized facility, Bayhealth relies on nurses who are driven to achieve nursing excellence and are passionate about the work they do and the care they provide patients.

Bayhealth is pleased to announce that the Inpatient Nurse Residency Program is now accredited with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP). This makes Bayhealth’s nurse residency program one of only 167 healthcare organizations nationwide that has earned PTAP accreditation with distinction.

“With Bayhealth’s commitment to quality nursing and patient care, we are proud to be able to provide our new nurses with this accredited and evidence-based transition to practice program,” said Nurse Residency Program Coordinator Amy Cunningham, MSN, RN, NPD-BC.

Bayhealth fully supports equipping new nurses to succeed in the professional setting while promoting positive patient outcomes. Studies show that accredited transition to practice programs promote positive patient outcomes, higher job satisfaction and lower work stress, while increasing overall job competence and retention in the first year of practice.

Nurse residents attend monthly classes that cover various nursing principles such as patient safety and satisfaction, resiliency, time management, critical thinking, effective communication, and evidence-based best practices. The residency program also encompasses on-the-job training through preceptors. In order to ensure quality outcomes, new nurse graduates are paired with preceptors, or official mentors, who have demonstrated high levels of compassion, accountability, respect, and teamwork. Near the end of the six-month program, nurse residents are offered a mentor to further continue and support role development.

“It is a privilege to be able to provide support and guidance to newly graduated nurses through the Nurse Residency Program. Accomplishing accreditation through ANCC proves that Bayhealth provides high-quality care in our community,” said Nurse Residency Program Coordinator Michelle Thompson, MSN, RN, PCCN.
