Bayhealth Acquires Outpatient Surgery Center

Monday, October 1, 2018 |
Bayhealth recently acquired the Dover Surgicenter, thereby adding an outpatient surgery center to its Kent Campus. Orthopaedic surgery, podiatry, general surgery, ENT (otolaryngology), gastroenterology, pain management, plastic surgery, and oral surgery are the types of surgeries and procedures currently available at the new Bayhealth Surgery Center, Kent Campus. As additional procedures are provided, the acquisition will further enhance Bayhealth’s ability to improve access to care to its patients while delivering it in a safe, high-quality environment.

“The majority of the staff who were at the center before the acquisition are still there. This has made it possible to provide excellent experienced staff,” said Bayhealth Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive Brenda Blain, DNP, RN-BC, FACHE, NEA-BC, who oversees operations at the new Bayhealth Surgery Center, Kent Campus. “The convenience for patients is also amazing. You can’t beat the parking. Physicians benefit by quick turnaround and reliable start times with a dedicated staff focused on getting the patient home.”

Bayhealth Senior Vice President of Planning & Business Development John Van Gorp says the goal of the acquisition was to retain the surgery center’s efficiency and convenience to patients and physicians, while bringing the resources of Bayhealth to elevate the environment of care. “Bayhealth has invested and will continue to invest significantly to provide a state-of-the-art surgical environment,” he said.

Edward Alexander, MD, is one of the surgeons working at the new outpatient surgery center. Some of the procedures he’s currently doing include upper endoscopies and colonoscopies, as well as hernia repairs and other minor surgeries requiring anesthesia. “I’m looking forward to my role in this hospital-caliber, outpatient surgical facility that is very convenient, private and patient friendly,” said Dr. Alexander.

Clinical Coordinator Jill Hundley, RN, CNOR, who has been working at the surgery center since 2013, says, “I’m excited about the transition and becoming a Bayhealth employee, and I am looking forward to the future. With previous staff staying on board in the transition with Bayhealth, it provides continuity of care for our patients.”
